KCI New Terminal On Track for 2023 Opening

by Mary Rooney | May 05, 2021

Kansas City International Airport's new $1.5 billion  single terminal project is at its halfway point. Construction started in March 2019 and is scheduled to be completed in March 2023.

A recent Kansas City Business Journal article shared that the new facility will have 39 gates, providing more than 130 seats in 2,500 sq. ft. per gate area on average. All passengers will pass through the same 70,000 sq. ft., post-security concession area, slated to have about 50 locations. A 630-foot-long connector walkway leads to the passenger gate area.

About 850 people are on site each day, completing an estimated $40 million to $50 million of work each month on various project components. The terminal has remained on time and on budget.

The Build KCI website shared recent updates of the terminal construction:

  • The new parking garage is 35 percent complete with more than  1,500 precast concrete panels in place. When complete in 2022, the garage will be 70 feet high and have more than 6,000 spaces. The project remains on time and on budget.

  • Massive cooling towers were recently installed above the KCI Airport New Terminal’s Central Utility Plant. Crews continue pipework installation around the cooling towers ahead of the early June milestone of blowing cool air in the New Terminal workspaces.

  • At nearly 600 feet long and 20 feet high, the Kansas City International Airport New Terminal’s tug road is nearing completion. Bricklayers have been hard at work for several months creating the tug road walls by placing each block by hand. Each problock and knockout bond beam block weighs 40 to 60 pounds. More than 600 cubic yards of grout was used to fill the walls. The road will provide the airlines an efficient pathway to move inbound passenger baggage being delivered from arriving aircraft to the belt that takes the bags to the lower-level baggage claim.
