Balancing Must-Do’s and Want-To-Do’s: A Guide for Student Success

As a mom of a senior in high school, I have a front row seat to watching students navigate their unique blend of responsibilities and experiences. They are juggling college visits, applications, and the bittersweet “lasts” of high school. Managing these priorities is a valuable lesson in balance that will serve them well beyond this year and hopefully as young professionals in the animal health industry.

Here are some strategies I am using as a guide to help my son manage his busy schedule effectively that may be helpful for other students—regardless of the profession they choose.

1. Prioritize Your Tasks

  • Make a List: Start with everything that needs to be accomplished. Split tasks into “must-do’s” (like schoolwork and applications) and “want-to-do’s” (like hanging out with friends).

  • Set Priorities: Identify which must-do’s are urgent and which can wait. This helps clarify what requires immediate attention.

2. Create a Schedule

  • Utilize a Weekly Planner: Use a planner or digital calendar to outline the week. Block off time for must-do’s and allocate specific slots for want-to-do’s.

3. Set Realistic Goals

  • SMART Goals: Set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals. This structure keeps focus and motivation high.

  • Break It Down: Larger projects can be overwhelming. Dividing them into smaller tasks can make them more manageable and rewarding to complete.

4. Stay Flexible

  • Adapt When Necessary: Life is unpredictable. If a must-do takes longer than expected, it’s okay to rearrange the schedule.

  • Be Kind to Yourself: Shifting priorities is normal. Balance isn’t about perfection; it’s about finding what works.

5. Incorporate Self-Care

  • Take Breaks: Schedule short breaks to recharge.

  • Social Time: Regular hangouts with friends are important. These moments are vital for mental health and can enhance productivity.

6. Reflect and Adjust

  • Celebrate Accomplishments: Take time to recognize both small and big achievements. Rewarding oneself for completing must-do’s creates positive reinforcement.

Finding the right balance between must-do’s and want-to-do’s is essential for a fulfilling student life. By prioritizing tasks, creating a structured schedule, and allowing for self-care, students can navigate their responsibilities while still enjoying their passions. Embrace this exciting time, and remember that it’s about progress, not perfection.

And, if you are a junior in college, don’t forget that now is the time to be sending in your applications for summer internships! Remember, the animal health industry is rich in opportunities to learn and grow for every kind of student.
