Tech and eCommerce Select KC Region for Expansion

With 2,545 jobs added, and more than $260 million in new investment, 2018’s project announcements reflect the nation’s growth in eCommerce, and the desire to move shared services to more affordable markets.  

In December, plans were announced for a new $94 million, 250,000-sq.-ft, 25-story office tower downtown. Copaken Brooks, a developer for the project, is calling the building “Strata.” Copaken is working on the project with Jury & Associates, H&R Block and the Port Authority. The two-year construction timeline would allow the building to open in fall of 2021, with construction beginning next fall.

KCADC was able to work with a number of local partners all over the region on multiple projects this year. Companies found competitive locations across the KC metro, from major national brands to growing tech firms.

GEICO announced a 500-employee, 50,000-sq.-ft. service center in Lenexa. Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway which owns GEICO, headlined the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Overstock.com announced that it would create 100 jobs in a 517,000-sq.-ft. Distribution Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Overstock chose KC for the strategic central location to allow for two-day ground shipping on more than 99 percent of customers in the U.S.

Turn5, an aftermarket auto parts retailer announced 100 jobs with an eCommerce Fulfillment Center, also in Lenexa.

TrialCard, a technology-enabled pharmaceutical solutions company, announced the creation of 225 employees in a new contact center in Kansas City.

Los-Angeles-based ChowNow announced that it would open a new regional technology and operations center in the KC region, bringing in more than 100 jobs.

Other project announcements included Faurecia, Vituity, Glass, Lewis & Co., EXL, Hopkins Manufacturing, Covenant Animal Health, Convey Health Solutions and Lincoln Rackhouse.
