PC Mag Lists Kansas City as Number One Choice for New Amazon Headquarters

by Lexi Ryan | Sep 08, 2017

Kansas City was selected as a top choice by PC Mag for the location of a second Amazon headquarters. If chosen, Kansas City has the opportunity to be the home of a $5 billion , eight million-sq.-ft. campus that could employ up to 50,000.

Amazon is duplicating its Seattle headquarters, where it made the city America’s biggest company town, according to Seattle Times. CNBC reported that an estimated $38 billion was added to Seattle’s economy from 2010 to 2016 due to Amazon’s presence.

PC Mag named Kansas City first among the top six cities that have the best chance to win Amazon’s HQ2. KC topped the list due to its status as an underrated tech hub, internet connectivity, tech startups in the Crossroads, affordability, nonstop flights and the local government.

In the headquarters search, Amazon will look for metro areas with populations of more than one million that are within 30 miles of a population center and within 45 miles of an international airport. Sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental impact will be emphasized during the process.

Amazon will look for a stable and friendly business environment, urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent and communities who “think big” and creatively when considering new locations and real estate options.

The company name is nothing new to Kansas City, as two distribution facilities located to the metro in 2016. Amazon announced an 822,104-sq.-ft. fulfillment center at Logistics Park Kansas City in Edgerton, Kansas in March 2016 before announcing a second 855,000-sq.-ft center in Kanas City, Kansas in July 2016. The company has four additional fulfillment operations in the KC metro, and employs 6,000 in the region already.

Kansas City is taking immediate action to assemble a formidable regional team and compile the most compelling business case for Amazon.

Gentleman, Hopefully you are way ahead of me. Some thoughts concerning your bid process: Don't spend hours in a meeting room with all the movers and shakers, ordering late nite pizza and trying hopelessly to cover all of Amazon's proposal points. Be very proactive, reach out to Amazon Corp after you learn how they do business. Discuss with Amazon personnel each bullet point in their proposal and how Kansas City can successfully meet each and every request. Also might want to reach out To your friends in Kansas and bring them into the proposal process. Hope this info is helpful. Sincerely and Good Luck! Dave Doerste Retired KCS RR, Yellow Freight, KCMCC 816-803-3085
